As part of our #MeetTheFinalSix campaign for the The Underdog: Grand Final, we caught up with Plain Royals to see what they’ve been up to…
★ So, tell us about the band…
We’re Plain Royals, we’re a five piece indie rock band from Bristol.
★ Can you describe your music to the average music listener?
Our main priority with our music is to make it fun, energetic and easy to dance too. Our lyrics are usually quite honest and to the point. we’ve got high melodic lead lines in the verses and then we drop into more anthemic open chorus’. Man, it’s such a difficult question, that just sounds more complex than it really is, come to the final and find out!
★ Tell us how you chose your band name? Is the story on your Facebook true?
It’s a bit of a vague one really, we really liked the idea of two words that sort of conflicts at with each other. The main thinking behind the name came from the lead singer, Conor, moving into The Tower of London when he was younger. He went from a pretty ordinary (Plain) background to living in essentially a medieval fortress with monarchy themed surroundings (Royal).
★ What has been the highlight of the competition so far?
We’ve loved every minute so far to be honest, we always love playing The Thunderbolt. We love the intimate feel of the venue but The Fleece was absolutely wicked too. Probably finding out we get to play the O2 would be our highlight.
★ Have you discovered any new bands via the Underdog that you feel worthy of a mention?
The competition has been great this year, everyone we’ve played with has been great, especially the ones that have made it to the final! we hadn’t seen White Noise Radio or Dusted Out before and they were especially enjoyable!
★ What can we expect from your performance at the final?
When we first played at the O2 we’d only been a band for about three months and, in hindsight, we weren’t really ready for it yet. It’s such a great feeling to know we can go back and absolutely smash it! Expect to have a good time!
★ What will you spend the £1,000 if you win the top prize?
We’re going to put it straight back into the band and get back into the studio as soon as possible so we can release some more new music for you all!
★ What made you sign up for The Underdog this year?
We’ve done loads of events with Synthetica in the past, including our EP launch at The Crofters [Crofter’s Rights], and they are always really well organised and promoted. We always enjoy working with you guys and The Underdog is such a good opportunity to play for new crowds at exciting venues.
★ You took part in The Underdog: 2015 but went out in The Heats – how does it feel to be in the final this year?
Isn’t that a personal question? Haha, No we were really gutted to go out in The Heats last year by such a narrow margin so we definitely brought our A-game this time round! With the competition being so good in The Semi’s we were really surprised to go through to The Grand Final but we are so excited and ready to give it our all.
★ You’re studying at BIMM – has studying music helped you progress as a band?
Yeah I think so to a degree (no pun intended) but we’ve really just got our heads down and focused on both the business side of our careers and the music!
★ Finally, where can people find out more information about you?
Check us out on Facebook! We also have an EP out called “Baldwin’s Loft” which you check out on Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music etc. If you really want to hear us at our best come to the o2 Academy on the 3rd September!
